Brazil needs notably through a demographic transition characterized by enlargement of the top of their age pyramid .. It is known that the metabolic syndrome and its individual components cause harmful effects to the health of the elderly, affecting the healthy aging process. In this sense, it is imperative to study the behavioral risk factors for the development of metabolic syndrome among elderly people. The study aimed to analyze the association of physical activity and sedentary behavior with components of metabolic syndrome in the elderly residing in the municipality of Alcobaça, BA. In the first article, a study of systematic review was conducted to identify and analyze global articles, which discussed the theme, sedentary behavior associated with metabolic syndrome in the elderly population. In this study, it was noticed that there is a positive association between the variables. The second article was characterized as observational analytical type with cross-sectional design, through the use of surveys exploratory methods, being part of Elsia project - Health Longitudinal Study of Aging Alcobaça. The sample consisted of 473 people of both sexes, aged over 60 years. For data collection was used a multidimensional questionnaire applied in individual interviews to identify the sociodemographic variables, health indicators, physical activity, sedentary behavior and the components of metabolic syndrome (diabetes, obesity, low HDL-c and hypertension). All these variables were evaluated in a subjective, self-reported form. Merely for waist circumference and body mass index were evaluated objectively. For data analysis we used descriptive statistics procedures (frequency, mean and standard deviation) and inferential statistics (regression binary and multinomial logistic regression analysis with odds ratio), considering p <0.05. The prevalence of sedentary behavior was 50.1% and physical inactivity was 47.4%. The increased exposure to sedentary behavior had a positive association with the development of metabolic syndrome, obesity and hypertension, even among active elderly. health guidelines should make specific recommendations to decrease the time sitting among older.eng
